White Howlite: Meaning, Healing & Properties

Everything you need to know about White Howlite.

IDENTIFICATION

White Howlite consists of Hydrous Calcium Borate (Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5) and often creates nodules that look a lot like cauliflower heads. It has a hardness of 3-3.5 on Moh’s scale and a specific gravity of about 2.5.

White Howlite is a light mineral, and is usually of a chalky white colour, with grey, brown or black veins or streaks and web-like markings and blotches. It can be described as a marbled stone.

It has been found in large quantities in the United States, mostly in California at the Sterling Borax Mine and Tick Canyon in Los Angeles County; Gower Gulch, Inyo County and Daggett, in San Bernardino County and other borate deposits around California.

You can identify White Howlite by its appearance of white stone having nodules with natural grey lines. Jewellery with it will have a clean look to it if it is pure white. The lustre is earthily glimmering, while the transparency is opaque. Above all, there is no cleavage. With these physical properties, you can easily identify this stone.

There are two more tests to conduct to know whether a given stone is a Howlite or not. If it is, it will shine as an off-white, yellowish-white, or a blue shade when kept under shortwave UV light. Another way to test it is to keep it in a hydrochloric acid solution in which a real stone shall dissolve without giving out any bubbles.

White Howlite best combines with:

  • Amber or Chrysoprase: You can pair with either if you want to increase your patience and understanding when it comes to people and situations.

  • Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Peridot or Blue Lace Agate: Paired with either of these crystals for experiencing peace and relaxation.
  • Hematite: These 2 combined promotes restful sleep and slows racing thoughts. Promotes peaceful thought and contentment with where you currently are in life.
  • Element: Wind, Air
  • Planet: Mercury
  • Zodiac: Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio
  • Chakras: Crown

HISTORY

White Howlite is named after Henry How, the scientist who brought this crystal to academic awareness in 1868 after finding deposits of the crystal in Nova Scotia.

However, the stone has received other names as well, most recently Snow Leopard Stone, for its resemblance to the fur of the beautiful large cat of Central and South Asia – and likely because these beautiful creatures also make a striking howl.

SPIRITUAL ATTRIBUTES

Howlite is a beautiful white stone that represents the spiritual qualities of stillness, tenderness, and open-mindedness.

When using this stone as a meditation aid and spiritual ally, you may feel yourself being transported to snow-packed mountain ranges, where spirit and nature are united in a blanket of white.

As with all white sacred gemstones, Howlite can bring peace and clarity of mind – its black lines, however, signify that the mind is still at work, focused, not shut off. Let Howlite guide you in the process of slowing down physically while maintaining full spiritual and mental awareness.

Its relation to snow makes it a crystal of the winter months when the bodies of mammals enter into either full or partial hibernation.

This process is integral spiritually; it provides the soul and spirit the energy they need to continue their important transformative works.

As you are undergoing your spiritual transformation, no matter what stage of your process you are in, Howlite provides the example of the snow leopard with its strength and focus, but also of the soft, white fur that it carries with it wherever he or she goes. Similarly, each of us can carry the softness of the spirit when making transformations in our life, remembering to treat ourselves gently because significant changes take time and do not happen overnight.
