Everything you need to know about Sodalite.
Sodalite is a rare rock-forming mineral known for its royal blue to blue-violet colour. It has a chemical composition of Na4Al3Si3O12Cl and is a member of the Feldspathoid mineral group. It scores 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, making it slightly brittle.
Sodalite is found in Brazil, Greenland, India, Canada, Namibia, Russia and the USA.
Fake sodalite exists, but it’s rare; the gem isn’t costly enough to justify faking. But suppose you are curious about the authenticity of your stone. In that case, you can either cut it to see if there is an odour (fake sodalite is odourless) or use acetone (nail polish remover) to strip any dyes on the stone.
Sodalite is typically a royal blue colour with streaky white veins running through the stone. There are, however, some colour varieties meaning it’s possible to find Sodalite that’s purple, brown, white or even colourless. But typically, the sodalite you’ll buy will be the previously mentioned royal blue colour. There is a slight confusion with Sodalite, Lapis Lazuli and Sodalitic Quartz.
- Sodalite is photographed above; it has white veins, blue-royal blue colouration and can sometimes black mineral growths
- Blue lapis lazuli is a deep, dark blue which usually shows golden specs of pyrite
- Sodalitic quartz is usually sodalite on quartz which appears to be more like blue spots on the quartz rock
Sodalite best combines with:
- Amethyst: This powerful pair is one for the mind and emotions. Sodalite eliminates confusion by clearing the mind and enhancing logical thinking. Amethyst helps remove blockages, rid negative energy, and put you in tune with your crown chakra – the place where you get ideas.
Clear Quartz: An excellent combo for stimulating your third eye chakra is the sodalite and Clear Quartz. Clear Quartz as the Master Healer of all stones helps amplify the already powerful attributes of the sodalite gemstone.
Tiger’s Eye: Place these two crystals on your office desk to induce positive energies as you work to improve communication in a hectic working environment and prevent misunderstandings. Plus, it can help in improving your mind and focus. This is particularly useful when working on a tight schedule or you need to stay productive.
- Black Tourmaline: Hold both of these energies to assist during a panic attack; it provides calming energies and can be a friend of support. They both deflect negative and external influences during your attack.
- Element: Water, Air
- Planet: Moon
- Zodiac: Sagittarius, Virgo
- Birthstone: November

Sodalite was first discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland and gained importance as an ornamental stone in 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were found in Ontario, Canada. The most celebrated source is the Princess Sodalite Mine just east of Bancroft, Ontario, named in 1901 for the Princess of Wales, when during a royal visit to the World’s Fair in Buffalo, New York, she was presented with a gift of Bancroft Sodalite and was so captivated by it that arrangements were made to quarry enough to decorate her London residence, Marlborough House. In 1906, 130 tons of the rock were shipped to England as a decorative stone in the Princess’ royal home.
