Everything you need to know about Labradorite.

Labradorite is a member of the Feldspar family and it has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the MOHS scale with the chemical composition of Calcium Sodium Feldspar Na(AlSi3O8)Ca(Al2Si2O8).

Labradorite is most commonly known for its brilliant flashes of colour called Labradoressence caused by lamellar twinning inside the crystal.

The stone, usually grey-green, dark grey, black, or greyish-white, is composed of aggregate layers that refract light as iridescent flashes of peacock blue, gold, pale green, or coppery red. The predominant blue varies within the light, displaying hues from deepest blue to various shades of pale, almost blue-green.

These twin lamellae structures are compatible at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures, resulting in separation and layering as the gemstone is formed. The extra colours you see in Labradorite are caused by refracted light traveling at different speeds through the layers and coming out as a different wave length.

Fake Labradorite can be identified by a hardness test. It is softer than the real one and can be scratched by a copper and steel needle. Fake Labradorite glows in light-blue colour under UV light. The backside of fake Labradorite is usually a dense and opaque material of black colour.

According to Inuit legend, a warrior saw the Northern Lights trapped in the rocks and struck them with his spear to free some of the lights. The stone was first described by Moravian missionaries of the late eighteenth century, introducing the stone into the European market. Labradorite is not exclusive to Canada however, and can also be found in Mexico, Russia and Finland. Since its discovery, Labradorite has been a highly sought-after stone for use in jewellery. Other than jewellery applications, Labradorite has been used in the production of glass, road construction and ceramic manufacturing.

We have two suppliers for our Labradorite. Both are mining in Tulear and Maniry Madagascar and exported back to South Africa for polishing and carving. Both suppliers work in a low environmental impact and are industry, family-run professionals. They all have in house lapidary services and they are one of the few direct sources for Brazil and Madagascan Rose Quartz. Our suppliers in Madagascar are community-friendly, they give back and support local families with work and provide the children with better education and lifestyle. All factory workers and miners are working in safe conditions and are paid fairly.

None of our suppliers work with children under age. It is illegal in most countries now to mine with children, the businesses we work with comply and are registered under the Ethical sourcing conduct.
